Privacy Policy

HitchHerd is a trip planner for RV travelers at hitchherd.com. This page describes what we collect and why. It is written from how the product actually works, not as a generic template. Questions: contact@hitchherd.com.

What we collect

• Account. Email, password (stored by our auth provider), display name, username, optional avatar and bio.
• Phone. A US or Canada mobile number to confirm the account with a one-time code, and — only if you opt in — to send HitchHerd alert texts. We store the number, when it was confirmed, and whether SMS alerts are on.
• Trips and places. Trip names, overnight stops, dates, notes, campgrounds you add or choose, and map routes. These are places you enter. We do not continuously track your phone’s GPS.
• Rig and lifestyle. Optional RV details, interests, and family age-bucket counts you put on your profile.
• Social. Friendships, chat requests, direct messages, caravan and meetup membership, and campground chat you write.
• Alerts. Push subscriptions on your devices and per-category alert preferences (push and SMS).
• Cookies. Session cookies so you stay signed in, and a local-date cookie so trip days match your timezone, not the server’s.

How we use it

To run HitchHerd: sign you in, save your trips, show overlapping travelers when you choose to share, send the alerts you turned on, and keep the service working and secure. We do not sell your personal information.

Who can see what

Your profile has a public switch. Off, other people see avatar and @handle only unless they are a friend or a co-member of a caravan or meetup with you. Location-sensitive details (where you are parked, family counts) stay off public profiles. Participating in a public caravan or meetup is not consent to publish your identity or location. You can turn off presence sharing for strangers in Profile → Privacy.

Alerts

We can send lock-screen push, email to the address on your account, and — when carrier registration allows — SMS. Each category (chat requests, friend requests, direct messages, arrival check-in, crew check-in, caravan plan, meetup schedule) has its own Off/On in Settings → Alerts. Emails include a link to the matching screen in HitchHerd. You can turn any category off there. SMS, when offered, is optional; message frequency varies; msg & data rates may apply; reply STOP to opt out. A confirmation code to verify a number is separate from alert consent.

Vendors

We use other companies to run the product: Supabase (accounts, database, file storage), Vercel (hosting), SignalWire (SMS), Mapbox (geocoding), OpenRouteService (driving directions), Stadia Maps (map tiles), Resend (transactional email), and xAI (campground listing enrichment). They process data only to provide those services.

Retention and deletion

We keep account and trip data while your account is open. There is no in-app delete-account button yet. Email contact@hitchherd.com to ask us to delete your account. STOP opts you out of SMS immediately.

Children

HitchHerd is not directed at children under 13. Optional family fields on a profile are about traveling with kids; they are not accounts for children.
